Head of Legal

The UK legal team is an essential and respected asset to the business units. The Head of Legal, as well as being part of the UK business unit’s leadership teams is a member of the wider A.S. Watson and CK Hutchison legal community. You will have a unique opportunity to network with and be part of a world class team.

Role Purpose:
The Head of Legal is responsible for the provision of legal and regulatory advice and support to the three business units. You will lead a team to provide proactive, commercially focused advice and direction to help senior executives make key decisions, manage risk and drive compliance, whilst supporting the business to achieve tactical goals and longer-term strategic ambitions. You are responsible for leading a team to implement initiatives, set standards, continuously improve processes, ensure good governance and drive efficiency. You will reinforce a culture of integrity, quality, ethical behaviour and responsibility across the business.

A typical day in this role includes:
• Building relationships and interacting with a variety of stakeholders: CEO, Managing Directors, Directors, Heads of Departments, ASW Group Legal, ASW Legal Heads outside of the UK and CK Hutchison representatives
• Leading and developing the legal team, providing regular coaching to ensure individuals become expert, pragmatic advisors in their respective areas and the team as a whole is respected and trusted across all business units
• Building an agile strategy designed to support the effective delivery of the business plan ensuring the legal team can evolve in the fast-paced environment in which we operate
• Championing best in class legal practice and advice, supporting senior executives to make key business decisions, whilst managing risk and compliance
• Developing a robust and engaging training programme in partnership with the People Team to ensure the business is educated to deliver legally sound initiatives
• Working collaboratively in cross functional project teams to plan the delivery of new business initiatives
• Building a strong external network of relationships with peers to benchmark legal approach, share best practice and promote each business unit’s interests
• Developing your relationship with relevant regulatory bodies (e.g., Primary Authority, Trading Standards) to keep abreast of a changing regulatory landscape and support the business units’ operations
• Building proactive plans to manage potential risk from emerging economic situations and changes to legislation
• Keeping technically up to date, especially in the fast-moving areas of data privacy and digital regulation

• You like an international flavour to your work – the AS Watson Group is a global business, and you enjoy liaising with colleagues in different operations to deliver/receive support


What you’ll need:
• Significant experience at a top law firm, and in-house, where you have had to advise at board level across multiple disciplines
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university / college and legally qualified to practice in England and Wales 
• Experience of leading a professional team
• Solid contract, digital, regulatory and privacy experience
• Experience gained in retail, FMCG or other consumer facing sector 
• A strong external network of peers
• An understanding of what’s going on in the economy and potential threats to the business
