As a key part of our business, our Belonging strategy has six focuses: Age, Disability, Gender Equality, LGBTQ+ (known as Pride), Race & Religion (Harmony), & Social Mobility (Access All Areas). You can read more about what we’re doing to foster a culture of inclusion from our networks below.

In 2024, we launched Unlearn. The campaign was created to celebrate our progress and highlight the responsibility we each have to educate ourselves, challenging and unlearning stereotypes and biases. We are extremely proud of this film and what it represents. Visit our Unlearn site to read more stories.

Social Mobility

Access All Areas Network

Our Access All Areas Network champions social mobility by promoting retail as a sector full of opportunity, where people can build skills, unlock their potential, and progress in their careers.

We believe that talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t, and we are committed to making development and progression accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or starting point. Through apprenticeships, work experience, mentoring, and development programmes, we create meaningful pathways into and within our business.

Our apprenticeship programme, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, has supported over 5,000 team members to gain qualifications and secure permanent roles. Alongside this, our Life Skills Programme, graded ‘Outstanding’, equips colleagues with essential skills such as digital literacy, money management, and wellbeing, helping them thrive both in and outside of work.

We also work in partnership with organisations such as the Care Leavers Covenant, Working Chance, and HMP Bronzefield to provide opportunities, mentoring, and skills development for underrepresented groups, reinforcing our commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible workplace for all.

Gender Equality Network

Our Gender Network is dedicated to creating a fair, supportive, and flexible workplace for people of all genders, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed and feel valued.

We actively drive awareness and progress across a range of important topics, including menopause, domestic abuse, sexual harassment, pregnancy loss, and men’s mental health and wellbeing. Through influencing policy, developing toolkits, and delivering education, the network helps build understanding and meaningful support across the business. We are committed to supporting working parents and carers, ensuring our policies are inclusive and effective for all, alongside our partnership with Carers UK to further strengthen this support.

The network also plays a key role in inspiring and celebrating colleagues, championing women and male allies, and encouraging everyone to achieve their full potential. We are proud to have been recognised with the 2024 Employee Benefits Award for Best Benefits to Support Menopause, reflecting our continued commitment to driving positive change and supporting our people.

We actively promote inclusive practices, including our commitment as signatories to the Halo Code, ensuring respect and acceptance of all hair types and styles, and challenging discrimination in the workplace.

Through our involvement in the Race at Work Charter, we continue to strengthen our commitment to improving racial and religious equality, working closely with our teams to drive meaningful and lasting change.

The network plays a key role in educating and celebrating cultural and religious diversity, hosting events, webinars, and celebrations such as Iftars and Diwali, helping to build understanding and connection across our business.

We have also supported the introduction of our Religious Holidays policy and are developing a Religious Inclusion Toolkit, reinforcing our commitment to creating a truly inclusive workplace for all.

Pride

Our Pride Network is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where LGBTQIA+ team members can bring their full selves to work and feel confident they belong.

We strive to ensure every colleague feels heard, represented, and supported, recognising that many within the LGBTQIA+ community may have experienced times where they could not be their authentic selves. By fostering an open and inclusive culture, we help build confidence and a strong sense of belonging across our teams.

As part of our ongoing commitment, we are members of Stonewall and are proud to be recognised as a Champion Employer, reflecting our progress in driving LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

We also extend our impact beyond the workplace, supporting local Pride events in Croydon and partnering with Switchboard, the national LGBTQIA+ support line, to promote and champion the vital services they provide. Through these partnerships and initiatives, we continue to strengthen our support for both our people and the wider community.

We support open and meaningful conversations through our Reasonable Adjustments Passport and Toolkit, enabling team members and managers to work together to ensure individuals feel heard, understood, and supported.

Through regular educational webinars on topics such as neurodiversity and mental health, we continue to build understanding across our teams and promote a more inclusive culture.

We are proud to hold Disability Confident Level 2 status and to be a signatory of the Valuable 500, reinforcing our commitment to advancing disability inclusion through meaningful action and leadership.

Our Age Network celebrates the strength and diversity of a truly multigenerational workforce, with team members ranging from 16 to 88. By bringing together different perspectives, experiences, and skills, we create a more inclusive environment where everyone can learn from each other and thrive.

We are committed to championing a fair, supportive, and rewarding workplace for colleagues at every life stage. The network provides a space for open conversations, allowing team members to share their experiences and shape the support they need throughout their careers.

By listening to and supporting our people, we continue to attract talent from all generations and create an environment where everyone feels empowered to grow and succeed.
